Part II: Moving the Pieces (Pawn)

  • The pawn

Pawns moves 1 square, except when they move at the first time, they can move 2 squares.

Let’s take an example, here’s a pawn on d2 moves 1 square

The notation is d2-d3 (means that the pawn moves from d2 to d3)

When the pawn moves for the first time, they can move 2 squares

The notation is d2-d4

When capturing opponent's pawns, they can move diagonally, ex. d4xe5 (means the pawn on d4 captures the piece on e5)

The unusual move is an en passant capture, let’s take an example here our pawn on d5, while the opponent's pawn is on c7

the opponent move is c7-c5

then our pawn captures the opponent’s pawn on c5 by taking the opponent’s pawn and moving our pawn on d5 to c6

Finally when the pawn on the 8th rank, the pawn can promote itself into another piece, a bishop, a knight, a rook or even a queen.
